ONE MORE TO GO IN THE QUEST FOR 200 In her 12th season at the helm of the Florida State women s basketball program, head coach Sue Semrau is on the verge of accomplishing a terrific career milestone. With a win at Miami, Semrau enters the showdown with North Carolina looking to earn the 200th victory of her stellar coaching career. Semrau is already used to making a little magic happen at FSU as she became the program s winningest coach in her ninth season on Feb. 19, 2006 when the Seminoles defeated Clemson in overtime. She has guided the Seminoles to double-digit victories in nine-straight seasons and to four-straight NCAA Tournaments and five overall. Her current coaching record is THE FSU-UNC SERIES North Carolina holds a 27-7 advantage in a series between the two schools that dates back to the season. FSU enters Friday s matchup having lost the past three games against UNC. FSU s last win over UNC was a thrilling overtime victory during the season. Interestingly enough, each of FSU s past two victories over the Tar Heels have come in overtime. FSU and UNC have met just one time the last three seasons. SERIES RESULTS VS. AMONG THE ACC COACHES When Coach Sue earns her 200th career victory, she will be the fourth coach in the ACC to reach the 200-win mark at his/her school. Virginia s Debbie Ryan (694), NC State s Kay Yow (680) and North Carolina s Sylvia Hatchell (533) are the others. Semrau is in her 12th season at Florida State. No other coach in FSU women s basketball history has coached more than 10 years with the Seminoles. high 25 points while guard Christian Hunnicutt was the only other player to score in double figures as she finished with 11 points. SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA FSU... PER GAME... UNC POINTS FG% FG% FT% REBOUNDS ASSISTS TURNOVERS STEALS BLOCKS HIGHEST RANKING IN PROGRAM HISTORY Florida State s ranking of No. 14 in this week s Associated Press poll, and No. 17 in this week s USA TODAY/ESPN Poll, are the highest rankings in program history. FSU has spent six weeks in the AP Top 25 this season (two at the beginning of the season and four currently) which is also a program record. ANOTHER 20 WIN SEASON Florida State has now recorded 20 or more wins in a season for the eighth time in school history and for the fourth time in the Sue Semrau era, including in four of the of the past five seasons. IMPROVEMENT IN THE ACC By beating Miami, FSU earned conference win No. 8 of the season. The Seminoles have now earned more ACC victories this year than they did all of last year when they finished 7-7 in league play. Under head coach Sue Semrau, FSU has now recorded eight or more conference wins six times. BEST START EVER IN THE CONFERENCE Florida State s 8-1 league record is its best start ever in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The school record for best ACC record at season s end is 10-4 as the Seminoles have achieved that record twice in program history - both in the Sue Semrau era. FASTEST TO 20 OVERALL, EIGHT IN THE ACC By moving to 20-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference on Feb. 8, FSU set new school records (by date) for fastest ever in program history to both 20 wins overall and eight in league play. The previous record for fastest to 20 was set twice in FSU history as the team accomplished that many wins on the same date of Feb. 9 during the and seasons. The fastest FSU had ever accrued eight ACC wins happened during the season when the Seminoles defeated Wake Forest, 73-61, on Feb. 15 of that year. MORE WINS THAN ALL OF LAST YEAR FSU s 20 wins this season is one more than the 19 victories the team earned all of last season. Since Sue Semrau inherited an FSU squad that was 5-22 overall - including 0-16 in the ACC in she has guided the Seminoles to double-digit victories in the last 10 seasons including fivestraight seasons of 17 or more wins. FOUR BLOCKS AWAY FROM NEW SCHOOL RECORD Junior forward Jacinta Monroe is within reach of setting a new school record for most blocks in a career. FSU s leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker posted two blocks against Miami and now has 206 career blocked shots - putting her just four shy of breaking former Seminole Brooke Wyckoff s all-time career record of 209 she set from Monroe has a team-best 65 blocks this season and is just 15 away from tying the FSU single-season record of 80 blocks set by Wyckoff during the season. Monroe is averaging 2.6 blocks per game this season. Her nine blocks against Georgia Tech and her seven swats against Duke are the two highest single game totals in the ACC this season. BOTH FSU BASKETBALL TEAMS ENJOYING SUCCESS For the first time in 17 years, both the women s and men s basketball teams at FSU are nationally-ranked at the same time. The women s team is enjoying its highest ranking ever at No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. The No. 25 men are ranked for the first time since December 2003 (Coaches Poll) and are ranked in both polls for the first time since During the season, the women and men were ranked at the same time on three separate occasions. The men were ranked on Jan. 27 at No. 23 in the AP while the women were No. 22 by the AP on Jan 28. That marked the first time in school history both teams were ranked at the same time. The following week the women stayed at No. 22 while the men stayed at No. 23 according to the AP and were added to the ESPN/USA Today poll at No. 23. The week of Feb. 10, 1992 marked the last time both Seminole squads were ranked at the same time. This season, however, marks the first time ever that both teams are ranked in both polls at the same time. A WIN OVER UNC WOULD TIE SCHOOL RECORD If the Seminoles defeat No. 8 North Carolina Friday, they will tie the school record for most wins over a ranked opponent in a season with five. The only time that the Seminoles have accomplished such a feat occurred during the season. FSU has earned wins over No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 25 Georgia Tech, No. 14 Virginia and No. 3 Duke this season. A WIN WOULD ALSO ADD TO ANOTHER RECORD FSU has already set the school record for most wins over a top-10 opponent in a season by beating #3 Texas A&M and #3 Duke. A win over No. 8 UNC would add yet another to that stellar statistic. COACH SUE AND SAMARITAN S FEET In 2003, the organization Samaritan s Feet was started with the goal to provide 10 million pairs of shoes for 10 million impoverished people in 10 years and Florida State women s basketball head coach Sue Semrau wants to help the cause. When the Seminoles host UNC, Semrau and members of her staff will coach the game in their bare feet to raise awareness for Samaritan s Feet. There have been many men s basketball coaches involved in the project. IUPUI men s basketball head coach Ron Hunter has coached barefoot in a game two-straight seasons. Semrau will be one of the first female coaches to get involved in the project. A VISIT FROM DAMIEN HORNE National recording artist Damien Horne will be in attendance at the North Carolina game. Horne s song, She Can Play is the official tune for women s basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Horne has been traveling throughout the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and making appearances at various ACC women s basketball games. He most recently appeared at UNC s home game against Duke earlier this week. FSU players have already met Horne as he serenaded them following the Seminoles win at Miami. SEMINOLES VS. TOBACCO ROAD Florida State is looking to stay undefeated against the Tobacco Road teams of North Carolina - Duke, NC State, UNC and Wake Forest. The Seminoles have already earned a win at NC State and at home against No. 3 Duke. After facing off with UNC at home, FSU will later close out its regular season with a trip to play at Wake Forest on March 1. FSU has actually defeated all four teams in one season -- during the season. SEMINOLES STILL PERFECT ON THE ROAD By beating Miami, the Seminoles moved to 8-0 in true-road games this year. In addition to winning at Miami, FSU has won at UNF, Temple, LSU, Virginia Tech, NC State, No. 14 Virginia and Boston College. The Seminoles have just two more road games this year as they play at Clemson and at Wake Forest. FSU has never finished undefeated on the road in the history of the program. SEMINOLES GO 4-1 AGAINST IN-STATE FOES THIS YEAR Florida State is now all-time against teams from the state of Florida. FSU has played Florida Gulf Coast, UNF Florida, UCF and Miami this year and went 4-1 in those games. MONROE, HARVIN REACH DOUBLE DIGITS AT HOME Junior forwards Alysha Harvin (Dania, Fla.) and Jacinta Monroe (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) are both from the Miami area and didn t disappoint when playing in front of friends and family in the game at Miami. Harvin finished the game with a team second-best 13 points and tied her career high with two blocks. Monroe scored 10 points and added two blocks and seven rebounds in the winning effort. BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS Head coach Sue Semrau went back to her most familiar lineup against Miami after switching things up against Boston College. Against the Eagles, true freshman Cierra Bravard started in place of junior Alysha Harvin while starters Jacinta Monroe, Mara Freshour, Tanae Davis-Cain and Courtney Ward remained the same. But against Miami, Semrau inserted Harvin back into the lineup in place of Bravard. That group of starters with Harvin in the lineup is now 9-1 while the group with Bravard boasts a 4-1 record. CAREER HIGH IN BLOCKS FOR HARVIN Junior forward Alysha Harvin tied her career high with two blocks against Miami. Entering this season, the 5-foot-11 guard/forward had only one block in her two-year career. This season alone, she already has six. MOST POINTS FOR HUNNICUTT IN AWHILE Sophomore guard Christian Hunnicutt s eight points against Miami was her most in 14 games this season since she posted nine in the win at Temple on Dec. 7. The rookie is averaging 6.5 points and 14.0 minutes per game over the last two contests. FRESHOUR TAKES A SPILL Senior guard Mara Freshour played a team-high 32 minutes in the win over Miami but had to leave the game late in the second half after crashing hard to the floor. The Nashville, Ind., native landed awkwardly on her left side and had to be helped off the court. There was no structural damage - just some deep bruising - and FSU s team captain is expected to start against UNC. JUST RIGHT FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE The Seminoles shot less than 40 percent from the field against Miami but sure made it count from the free-throw line in that game. By connecting on 19 of their 21 free-throw attempts - including a perfect 12-for-12 in the second half - the Seminoles finished the game shooting a season-high 90.5-percent from the charity stripe. The last time FSU shot better than 90 percent in a game was in the season. The Seminoles shot 93.3 percent (14-for-15) vs. Clemson on February 9, 2005 and also at Montana on December 29, DAVIS-CAIN HAS 56 THREE-POINTERS THIS YEAR Senior guard Tanae Davis-Cain has made 56 of her threepoint attempts this season, which is good enough for second all-time on the list of most three-pointers made in a season. Senior guard Mara Freshour owns the Seminole record for most treys in a season with 66 - a mark she set last year. Davis-Cain has made 24 of her three-pointers in ACC games this year, which is good enough for third in the conference at 2.7 triples per conference matchup. FRESHOUR CONTINUES TO MOVE UP THE LIST Senior guard Mara Freshour continues to move up the list in the career games-played department. The Nashville, Ind., native is now tied with LeeVayne Oliver and Holly Johnson for third place all-time in program history with 122 games played in her career. Freshour won t be finished there, however, as it s very likely she will become the new record holder in this category before her senior season is complete as Glenda Stokes FSU record of 130 games is within reach. Career Games Played Career Record: 1. Glenda Stokes Alicia Gladden LeeVayne Oliver 122 Holly Johnson 122 Mara Freshour 122 A LOOK AT THE SEMINOLE D IN THE ACC Florida State has been getting it done on both ends of the floor this season in the ACC. In the nine conference games that they have played, the Seminoles have averaged 71.3 points per game, while giving up just 61.1 points per game. Those both rank No. 4 in the ACC, and FSU is the only team to rank in the top 4 in both categories. JUST 15.4 TURNOVERS PER GAME THE LAST FIVE Florida State turned the ball over less than its average against Miami as the Seminoles had just 16 turnovers in the win. The Seminoles are now averaging 18.5 turnovers per game. In fact, FSU is averaging just 15.4 turnovers per game over the past five contests. In the Sue Semrau era, FSU averaged 20+ turnovers per contest in her first three seasons. In each of her NCAA Tournament seasons, FSU has averaged no more than 18.3 turnovers per game and that was last season. FSU Turnovers Per Game In Semrau Era NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament FRESHOUR GETS TO 1,000 Senior guard Mara Freshour scored a game- and seasonhigh 22 points against Boston College and by doing so became the 23rd player in Florida State history to reach 1,000 career points. Freshour s accomplishment marks the second time this season an FSU player has reached that scoring plateau as fellow senior Tanae Davis-Cain hit 1,000 for her career in the game against UCF. Both Davis-Cain and Freshour are also Nos. 1 and 2 at FSU in most three-pointers made in a career. 1,000-Point Club Tanae Davis-Cain: 1,143 Mara Freshour: 1,014 Career Three-Pointers 1. Tanae Davis-Cain Mara Freshour 154 WARD FROM LONG DISTANCE With her one three-pointer against Miami, Courtney Ward now has now made 27 treys on the season. In her rookie year a season ago, Ward made just 29 all season. Courtney Ward s proficiency behind the three-point line has been some of the best the program has ever seen. She is currently shooting.540 (27-for-50) from behind the arc this season, and.424 (56-for-132) for her career. That would place her at the top of the all-time career and single-season threepoint percentage ranks.
